Happy April! It was a rough cold and flu season, and now lots of us are dealing with springtime allergies.
In fact, studies are showing that global climate changes are having an effect on pollens. It seems that the pollen season is starting earlier, lasts longer and hits harder. Below are some things you can do to help deal with allergies naturally:
Nettie Pot – this is a good old fashioned tool to help alleviate inflammation of the sinuses (you can also use a spray to get the same effect).
Indoor Air Filter – this is an easy way to reduce exposure in your home or office to pollens, dust and even some molds.
Local Honey – using this honey will help your body become desensitized to your local pollens.
Yoga – another reason to say Namaste… studies have shown that there are quite a few poses and breathing exercises to help reduce inflammation and provide relief from the symptoms of allergies.
Detoxification – spring is the ideal time for a liver cleanse. You can go simple by taking a supplement, or go all out by doing a juice fast. Very beneficial!
Natural Homeopathic “allergy shots” – believe it or not this concept started hundreds of years ago. You can take a homeopathic (diluted) preparation of any allergen such as grass, tree pollen, mold or dust – to desensitize your allergic reactions. Taking the homeopathic drops is very inexpensive, there are no invasive injections, and they work quickly to alleviate symptoms without side effects.
Green is the color of springtime… so don’t forget to eat your greens! May you and your family enjoy all the beauty the season has to offer.

Cleansing out the Old
Happy New Year! To cleanse out the old is a classic way to get a fresh start. We all have the desire to start the year out right, and I wholeheartedly encourage you to reach for the stars. Set some intentions for how you would like your year to unfold, and take a peek at a few of my favorite ways to kick-start the year:
> Gather unused household items to donate
> Clean out the pantry of old or unhealthy foods
> Try a juice fast
> Do a liver cleanse
> Take supplements to kill off parasites or Candida
> Drink more water
> Make a big pot of vegetable soup
> Remove the clutter from your work space
> Start a gratitude journal or a vision board
> Reduce your carbon footprint
> Practice deep breathing…and smile!
In honor of the season, take some time to reflect on your life. In which areas would you like to simplify, and in which areas would you like to expand? I would love to hear your thoughts and am honored to be a part of your adventure.
I wish you and your loved ones many blessings!
First there is Halloween, then Thanksgiving, then holiday parties.
What this all means is lots of celebrating that revolves around food. We tend to eat more quantities of rich and processed foods starting around this time than any other time of year.
What does this means to your overall health? It’s usually nothing too serious – maybe just some bloating and digestive discomfort. On the other hand, it could lead to an overgrowth of yeast, unwanted visitors such as parasites, food sensitivities, headaches, sleep disturbances, weight gain, rashes, and even mood changes.
In order to be able to enjoy the festivities without too much concern, there are a few secret weapons to have on hand.
First off, I strongly recommend taking digestive enzymes. It is believed that once we reach our 30’s we often do not effectively break down our food, especially if we eat mainly cooked or processed foods. That’s where enzymes come into play! If you are eating a perfect diet of mainly raw organic fruits, vegetables and grains, then you probably won’t need to add in digestive enzymes – but if not you can take a few enzymes at the start of your meal to aid the digestive processes.
I recommend a good plant based enzyme before the meal and a Betaine HCL supplement after the meal.
Another key supplement to take is a quality Probiotic. This is to be taken on an empty stomach and will help to populate the gut with healthy bacteria which goes a long way to prevent some of the symptoms I mentioned above.
These 3 supplements can make the difference between enjoying your meal all the way through or paying for it later! Furthermore, when the holidays are over you can do some cleansing and move into the New Year feeling great!

The Virtues of Pumpkin:
Pumpkins are much more than a Halloween decoration! This humble vegetable is also incredibly rich in vital nutrients.
Health benefits of Pumpkin
> Very low in calories, and contains no saturated fats or cholesterol; however, it is rich in dietary fiber, anti-oxidants, minerals and vitamins.
> Storehouse of many anti-oxidant vitamins such as vitamin-A, vitamin-C and vitamin-E.
> Excellent source of many natural flavonoid compounds such as carotenes, cryptoxanthin, lutein and zea-xanthin.
> Good source of the B-complex vitamins such as niacin, folate, vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine), thiamin and pantothenic acid.
> Rich in minerals like copper, calcium, potassium and phosphorus.
> Pumpkin seeds are high in protein, minerals, vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids.
> The seeds also provide iron, selenium, zinc and the amino acid tryptophan.
With that being said, it is also a delicious ingredient in many tasty recipes. Try it in soups, pesto, muffins, deserts, and even as a pizza topping.
The recipe that inspired me to write this: a very tasty pumpkin and goat cheese quesadilla!
I hope you will experiment... and Enjoy!

A Spoonful of Honey
Where does the time go? It's already the end of September... WOW.
I have a few things to share, first off for those of you who anxiously await the arrival of the Flu Nosode each year... it has arrived! The 2012/2013 version is available both on-line and at the center.
I am also thrilled to announce that we have finally found a front office person, her name is Ashley Broersma and we welcome her Paige will still be coming in the afternoons while she is in Grad school, and the original Ashley (Thornton) will also be in a few afternoons per week. Thank you to everyone for all of your patience through the transitions at the front desk!
Last week the Rosh Hashanah holiday was celebrated by many around the world. There is a tradition to help bring in a sweet New Year which is to dip apples in honey. It got me thinking that honey is such an underappreciated remedy these days. There are so many wonderful healing properties of raw, organic honey.
Below are a few examples:
> Certain phyto-nutrients found in raw honey have been shown to possess cancer-preventing and anti-tumor properties.
> Other benefits include boosting the overall immune system
> Helping with coughs and sore throats
> Decreasing allergies to pollen
> Aiding blood sugar regulation
> Helping to heal ulcers
> Treating various bacterial infections
And let’s not forget that honey has been used for centuries to help with wound healing, cuts, burns and many skin conditions.
Honey is really remarkable and it tastes great. Plus... bees play such an important role in our ecosystem that we would do good to honor them, and take advantage of what they provide to enhance our health and well-being.
Here's to Sweet Health!
One of the things I love to do in summer is eat lots of fresh seasonal fruits
and veggies. In fact, just this morning I had half of an organic cantaloupe
that was absolutely delicious!
It reminded me of how lucky we truly are to have access to such amazing fresh
food year round in Southern California. In fact...we are lucky in so many ways
- we have perfect weather, delicious produce, access to great alternative healthcare,
a gym on every corner, beautiful beaches, and a whole host of other special
things and places that are unique to us.
Summer is also a great time to embark on a "cleanse" since it is
hot outside and we tend to eat less in general. When organic watermelon is
in season I love to do a "mono diet" of just watermelon, which can
be done for a minimum of one day and as long as 10 days. This one is really
fun and easy if you like watermelon.
The cleanse I just finished was a 10 day juice fast. I was totally inspired
by watching the documentary film, "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead". This
documentary follows Joe Cross as he embarks on a 60 day juice fast and believe
it or not this is a really great movie. It takes on some serious health issues...and
shows a great solution in a really fun and light manner!
If you would like to see the film - it can be viewed from the website www.jointhereboot.com.
You can also buy it online or get it on Netflix. The website mentioned has
lots of great recipes for juicing, and it also gives quite a few options for
juicing while eating regular food if you don't want to do a fast.
Please keep in mind if you decide to do a fast that it is very important to
end the fast properly. This means to ease into eating very carefully. For any
of you who are interested, I have created a special protocol to ease into eating
and am happy to email that to you.
In the meantime...enjoy your summer!

Better Health This Spring
Spring is such an interesting season. Depending on where you live, you might anticipate it or you could possibly even dread it. One thing is for sure – when the seasons change it has an effect on your health!
I have often talked about how in Chinese medicine each season has a ruling “element” of the five elements. Spring is associated with the Wood element. Wood symbolizes growth, activity and new beginnings. The organ associated with the wood element is the Liver (the largest organ in the body) and its companion the Gallbladder. These two powerhouses are responsible for everything from detoxification to hormone balance to metabolism to muscle flexibility and much more. The Liver is actually regarded as The General of the body creating order and harmony throughout the system.
Because of environmental factors, these organs are usually overworked and underappreciated!
Some symptoms of an overloaded Liver
Anger / Irritability
Neck and Muscle Tension
By doing some type of detoxification you can take the stress off the Liver…and feel great! Spring is the ideal time for cleansing and rejuvenation for overall health and well-being. You could do something as simple as cut out processed foods or you could go for a full on Liver Detox program…whatever you feel most comfortable with. Pretty much anything you decide to do will be beneficial.
Here’s to a happy and healthy Liver seasonJ
Yours in Health,
Taking prescription medications? These are the facts you need to know!
Something that keeps coming up in the literature I am reading lately has to do with prescription medications and just how dangerous they are. Now I'm not writing this to scare you... I'm writing this to let you know there are some things to consider regarding prescription meds.
One of these considerations is the fact that there are often natural alternatives which can be tried first. Most prescription medications are chemically produced in a laboratory. When ingested by the body, they will produce a chemical change. This change has a desired effect, and it also has undesired side effects. One thing that is very rarely addressed is the fact that these meds will also deplete the body of many of its naturally occurring nutrients.
An easy fix: take the supplements that will neutralize these potential health issues before they become a problem!
One fact that you REALLY need you to know: there have been 0 deaths from vitamins or dietary supplements in the U.S. in any given year. Another fact: according to cancure.org, over 100,000 people die each year from prescription drug side effects in the U.S.
That information is definitely disturbing, however I do know that some prescription drugs are necessary. Take a look at the list below to see what you or your loved ones can do to improve your overall health if taking these medications.
Calcium, Vit D, Magnesium, Zinc, Vit C, Vit B6 and B12, Folic Acid, Selenium, Chromium
Calcium, Magnesium, Vit B1 and B6, Vit C, Zinc, Co Q 10,
Hypertension Meds Co Q 10, Vit B6 and B1, Zinc, Co Q 10, Vit B12, Folic Acid
B Vitamins, Vit K, Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, Zinc
B Vitamins, Folic Acid, Vit C, Magnesium, Selenium, Zinc
That is a sampling of drug-induced nutrient depletion. In this case I say that knowledge is power... so hopefully with this knowledge you can be proactive and simply take action by supplementing with the necessary nutrients.
Hope This Helps!

High Tech Healing Explained on Dr. Oz
I have some exciting information to share today! I recently watched a Dr. Oz segment on chronic pain that did an excellent job of explaining how pulsating electromagnetic fields work to heal the body. He showed animations of how these pulsed magnetic fields have a positive effect on each cell of the body, and how they can affect the nerve cells to reduce pain and inflammation.
The great news for most of you is that you have already experienced this amazing electromagnetic healing from the treatment on the Quantum machine. And as you know, the QX machine does more than just treat pain – after running a computerized body scan to see where the issues are, it sends out electromagnetic pulses to help with just about every system in the body.
Here is a little lesson on how this works:
Science teaches us that everything is energy. All energy is electromagnetic in nature since all atoms, chemicals and cells produce electromagnetic fields. Every organ in the body produces its own signature bio-electromagnetic field. In fact, all 70 trillion cells in the body communicate via electromagnetic frequencies. Nothing happens in the body without an electromagnetic exchange.
Electromagnetic energy controls chemistry, which in turn controls tissue function. Disruption of electromagnetic energy in the cell causes impaired function…which ultimately leads to the disease process.
The good news is that pulsed electromagnetic healing can address impaired chemistry and improve the function of the cells, which in turn improves health. These frequencies can penetrate every cell in the body to stimulate healing in a beneficial and truly non invasive way.
Having healthy cells is not a passive process. Active, regular tuning up is necessary to slow aging and reduce the risk of cell dysfunction. We don’t always know what is going on inside of our bodies, which is why the QX technology is so helpful to pick up on the imbalances and correct them early – before they lead to trouble.
Not only are the treatments designed to de-stress the cells…they also work to:
Reduce pain, inflammation, and platelet adhesion. They improve energy, circulation, oxygenation, sleep quality and blood pressure. They help to balance the immune system, stimulate RNA and DNA, regenerate cells, accelerate repair of bone and soft tissue, stimulate cellular detoxification and relax muscles. And my all time favorite is how they work to balance brain waves, brain chemistry, hormones and overall well-being!
You can utilize treatments on the QX machine for acute or chronic issues. It is also greatly beneficial to do tune-ups 4 times a year, especially at the change of seasons.
I am just so grateful to be able to provide this high tech form of healing. It is amazing to see how well people respond to the treatments and how quickly issues can resolve, especially in conjunction with taking remedies.
Here you can view the YouTube video on pulsed electromagnetic fields:
In honor of Thanksgiving I want to give thanks for the wonderful gifts we get from our food. I know we sometimes forget that food is not only for pleasure, it is also designed to nourish our bodies.
There was a time not so long ago that we could get everything we needed from our food source. Food processing and industrialization has changed much of that – but if we eat mindfully we can still get most of what we need. At that point taking supplements becomes less crucial – it is still an option but not mandatory.
Below find a quick chart to see where you can get certain nutrients from foods:
Milk, eggs, liver, orange and green vegetables and fruits
Sunlight, milk, egg yolks, liver, fish
Wheat germ, liver, eggs, nuts, seeds, dark leafy greens, sweet potatoes, avocados, asparagus and cold pressed oils
Oysters, red meat, poultry, beans, nuts, seafood, whole grains,
And that is just a sampling of what is available when we are eating well! So I say stick to a balanced diet of whole foods, stay away from the junk and if for some reason you aren’t able to get what you need – that’s the time to take supplements!
In the meantime – have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Nancy Sacks, D.H.M.
And so it starts…flu season has kicked off! And it comes early this year – just as we start with the Halloween candy :-)
Here’s the scoop:
The 2011/2012 Flu Nosode is in, so if you want to get your natural flu prevention I would recommend starting now. The dosage is ¼ dropper one time per week for 4 weeks straight, then as needed if symptoms of the flu arise.
I have other recommendations to keep you healthy starting now as well:
• Bump up your Vitamin D to 4000 IU daily.
• Add either a fresh green drink or a Greens supplement to your daily regimen – this will help to keep your system more alkaline.
I like to change up the Immune supplements I take so here is a list of my favorites to choose from:
• Immune Complex
• Echinacea w/ Vitamin C
• Olive Leaf Extract
• Super C Plus
• Immune System Regenerator
For the extra sugar consumption that happens this time of year:
• Add in a daily Probiotic supplement. This should be taken either first thing AM or before bed (no food 30 minutes).
• I also recommend extra Minerals and Vitamin B complex.
Other remedies to consider:
• Candicid Forte
• Chromium Forte
• Sugar Mix
• Appetite Control Drops
And as always I like to have the following on hand:
Click Here to print out your REFRIDERATOR SHEET for fall/winter!
Well it's that time of year again...the weather is unpredictable, those of us with children in school are getting back into a routine, and the days are getting shorter. In Chinese medicine, autumn is lung season and is associated with breathing difficulties, among other things. I want to discuss a few key strategies for maintaining health and happiness through this and all seasons!
Hydrate: I know I harp on this subject, but let´s face it…without water there is no life. As most of you know, this is the season of the winds – which also means that it is a dry season. All the more reason to drink good, pure water. Remember the rule; drink one half your body weight in ounces each day, preferably between meals. When the winds blow and it remains dry outside for days at a time, it is a good idea to increase that amount. Most fruits and veggies have a high water content and can help you get what you need. For those of you with small children, get them in the habit of drinking water instead of juice, especially this time of year.
Breathe: Since it is lung season, I think it is an appropriate time to talk about this simple yet sometimes forgotten aspect of life...the breath. Webster's definitions are: to take air into the lungs and let it out again, respiration, to live, to rest, life, spirit. Some of the most profound and ancient healing techniques known to man are centered on deep breathing. Yoga and meditation are examples of this, and both emphasize the fact that correct breathing can actually heal the body, mind and spirit! So next time you are faced with a stressful situation, deadlines, traffic, time constraints, aggravations, setbacks or even surprises why not take a slow, deep breath and then let it out very slowly. You might be pleasantly surprised at how much this small act may help.
Allergies and Asthma: Unfortunately, adult asthma has become a huge problem. This is partially due to our poor air quality, and for some the asthma is induced by allergies. The medications prescribed for asthma are very harsh on the body, and for some don't help enough to outweigh the serious side effects. I am including this information here to remind all of you that there is natural relief for both allergies and asthma! (The allergy newsletter can be found here). Each case of asthma is treated individually and is too complex to list here, so please feel free to contact me if you or someone you know has recently been diagnosed, or has been suffering for a prolonged period with breathing difficulties.
Say NO to the Flu Vaccine: As most of you know from previous newsletters, I am against the Flu vaccine. If you are at all concerned, or are being pressured into getting the vaccine for either you or your family, the following are possible alternatives:
2011 Flu Nosode taken 1 time per week for 4 weeks then as needed, Guna flu vials, Preventicin, Infecticin, Cell Salts, Pleo Quent.
Nucleotide Complex, High Strength Yin Chiao, Immune complex, Olive Leaf extract, Reishi Esberitox chewables, Imu-Max for children.
Immune System Regenerator, Super C Plus, Greens mix, Vitamin B complex, Vitamin D and Selenium. Quality counts, so stay away from synthetic and mass produced products that contain toxic tag-alongs which can be spotted on the label under Other Ingredients.
The changing of seasons is full of possibilities, and I wish you all a wonderful and joyous autumn (the autumn equinox is Spetember 21st). As always, I am available by phone or email...we are in the office Monday - Friday and if you need something sent, Jodi is happy to help!

How To Increase Fat Burning By 30%
A proven and simple fat loss technique often overlooked is water consumption.
Researchers from Humboldt University, utilizing a technique known as whole-room indirect calorimetry, discovered that drinking water activates your body's natural ability to burn fat. Drinking 16 ounces in one sitting increased metabolic rate by 30%!
To take advantage of this simple fat burning technique, drink 16 ounces of good drinking water upon waking, and 15 minutes before every meal. In addition to fat loss, you will also benefit with better digestion and elimination, improved skin tone and appearance, and more energy.
A good rule of thumb to follow is to ingest at least half your body weight in ounces. So if you weigh 100 pounds, drink at least 50 ounces of good quality drinking water. This method only counts when you drink the water away from food, not during meals.

Fall Weather Symptoms: Fight Back!
Well it seems that even here in sunny Southern California it can be true fall weather! It's that time of year when we can't predict how it will be from day to day, which is hard on you allergy sufferers and also for anyone affected by drastic changes in weather.
According to Chinese medicine, it is now Lung/Large Intestine season – so it's crucial to keep your digestion at its optimal.
This is the time to take your digestive enzymes religiously, and it is also a great time to consider any of the following:
Parasite cleanse herbs,
Colon cleanse herbs,
Candida cleanse herbs,
and of course some good quality Probiotics.
Doing this now could set you up for a healthy cold/flu season.
If you are bothered by a dry cough, post nasal drip or sinus issues, here are some helpful remedies:
Lung Complex, Zinc Plus Lozenges, Viral Clear,
Bi Yen Lin,
Nose spray and homeopathic
Kali Bic. For extra prevention it would be helpful to stay away from dairy, and for some of you even wheat can worsen your symptoms.
Also in stock for those of you who want to prevent the flu the natural way…is this year's Flu Nosode 2011. As you may know from newsletters past, I am strongly against the flu vaccines for many reasons – however I am happy to report that the homeopathic Flu nosode works great!
Shop all remedies for fall weather symptoms.

Timing Is Everything … When It Comes To Water
We already know how important it is to drink a lot of water, but who knew timing effected things?
In fact, drinking water at the correct time maximizes its effectiveness on the human body:
2 glasses of water after waking up helps activate internal organs
1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal helps digestion
1 glass of water before taking a bath helps lower blood pressure
1 glass of water before going to bed helps avoid stroke or heart attack.

Summer Travel Solutions:
Summer is just around the corner…and for many of you that means travel. I wanted to give you my top recommendations of what products can help with the various issues that arise while traveling. Over the years I have heard from lots of you that having these on hand has been a real lifesaver
Traumeel – this homeopathic cream can be used externally for bruising or general soreness due to overdoing it. It also comes in liquid and tablet form for internal use, and can be used for all of the above plus can relieve trauma, pain and inflammation.
Travel Sickness Drops – this can be used in place of Dramamine for motion sickness or nausea, as well as for minor stomach disturbances.
Digestzyme – I wouldn’t consider going anywhere without this supplement. These digestive enzymes can help with overall digestion as well as helping to break down the more cooked, processed and rich foods that we tend to eat when we travel.
BiteCare Gel and Biting Insects Drops – the drops will help to keep the insects from biting you when taken preventively, and the gel will help if you do happen to get bit or stung.
Esberitox – we are often exposed to infectious germs when traveling, and this remedy will help to keep your immune system strong. It is a chewable Echinacea formula which is super easy to stick in your bag or your pocket, it tastes great and it can be used for the whole family.
Stomach Relief Drops – to have just in case…this fabulous homeopathic can be used for gas, bloating, cramps, heartburn, and can even help with the symptoms of food poisoning.
And last but not least…for those of you who have trouble sleeping in a strange place try:
Revitalizing Sleep Formula – this best seller works to help you fall asleep, stay asleep and feel more rested in the morning. For those of you who would rather have a homeopathic formula for sleep – I like the Quietiva drops or the Quietude pellets as well.
Wherever you go, this assortment can keep you well prepared for most situations. And, if your summer doesn’t involve travel – hopefully you will be able to take a “staycation” and enjoy your home and our local sites and beautiful beaches. I sometimes look forward to staying local just as much as travel abroad; after all…we do live in paradise!

The Perfect Recipe for Allergies
People are experiencing more allergy and even asthma symptoms than ever before! Even people who have never before had allergies are experiencing symptoms this year. The reason behind this is an abundance of rain followed by warm temps, throw in a few high winds and there is your recipe for escalating pollen counts. Add to that the chemicals in our food and other environmental pollutants and our bodies get overwhelmed and unable to handle everything…which in turn leads to the symptoms that tell you your body is allergic to something.
Unfortunately allergy season is turning into a year round issue for many people. What to do? Well if you are lucky you have pinpointed the allergens – that can be done through allergy testing either conventionally or from the QX machine’s allergy program. Once understood, there are a variety of homeopathic remedies and botanicals you can take to “desensitize” you from the offending substance. This means that you can naturally cure yourself of the allergy response by strengthening your immune system, reducing inflammation and also by introducing miniscule amounts of the allergy substance so that your body no longer recognizes it as “bad”.
I have helped hundreds of people with allergies, and I often find that poor digestion is linked to the allergy response. It is always helpful with inflammatory conditions to make sure your digestion is functioning optimally. This can be done with the help of digestive enzymes and Probiotics. I also highly recommend dealing with other deeper issues that could be impairing digestion such as parasites, Candida or a sluggish liver. All of these issues can be easily resolved with the appropriate supplements and cleanses. Again, when you are unsure of the underlying culprit, some sort of testing is necessary – and I feel the best tool in helping to figure out what’s at the root of the problem is a body scan on the QX machine.
So, if you or anyone in your family is suffering with allergy symptoms – know there is help! This applies to young children as well as adults. You can feel better using safe, natural and time tested remedies…and the healing often goes beyond the external symptoms of sneezing, itchy skin, burning eyes, upset stomach, post nasal drip or cough. Many people tell me that when the allergy symptoms go away they have more energy, clearer thinking, feel less bloated, thinner and they just feel better and happier in general.
For relief – check out a few of the new Remedy Kits I have put together for optimal synergistic healing:
The people of Japan are in my prayers as they deal with this horrific tragedy. The magnitude of loss, suffering and devastation is absolutely overwhelming. And now we are facing the challenge of nuclear radiation exposure - especially here on the West Coast.
I have received calls asking about the possible effects of this radiation...and although there are many conflicting reports in the media - there are certain things we can do now.
The main thing is to focus on Kelp and products that have Kelp as a main ingredient. It may not be necessary to start right away with Thyroid support, but if you are inclined to do so I say start with a homeopathic formula. As far as Iodine - my favorite form is liquid drops, and for superb toxicity absorption use Super Nano Green Tea which is an amazing product and is safe for everyone.
Also, I have just ordered a special homeopathic combination called "Radiation" which will help to combat radium and strontium exposure (these are backordered until April 11th so let me know if you would like to be put on the list).
Feel free to call for any of the products listed below or you can get them directly from me at www.holistichavenpharmacy.com. I have a special protocol list at the front desk so feel free to call for specific dosages.
In the meantime I hope you will join me in sending out positive healing energy.

Spring is around the corner!
I have always loved this time of year...the environment comes to life and the days get longer. For me it also means that it's time to cleanse my body, since spring is really the best time to embark on a cleansing or detoxification program of some sort.
The good news is that cleansing can help to minimize allergy symptoms, which are usually at their worst in spring. Think of allergies as an inside job, even if you suffer from airborne pollens. The allergy response is pretty predictable - your body is exposed to what it believes to be a poison, it then creates a cascade of events much like in a domino game. The symptoms you experience are a result of this cascade.
One way to have fewer symptoms is to eliminate your exposure to the allergens - but that isn't always possible. So what to do? Reduce the toxic load your body has to deal with and you will be amazed at how much better your body handles allergies and sensitivities.
Speaking of reducing your toxins...that's where the liver comes into play. The liver has hundreds of jobs and thousands of functions, one of them being to break down toxins into waste material. But in our world it's so easy for the liver to get overloaded with too many toxins. It then becomes sluggish and has a difficult time doing its job effectively. At which point we start to feel sluggish, bloated, and just generally yucky. Then it starts...we begin reacting to common foods, pollens and even our environment. All because our bodies are over burdened with toxins!
Ok, you get the picture. That's the scoop on why, now what to do about it? You can take specific herbal formulas, go on a fast, or just modify your diet.
To help you navigate what's available - I am offering a free lecture on Cleansing and Detoxification. Learn about some fasts and mono diets that are powerful and can produce profound results in a short period of time, as well as the New West diet which is more of a lifestyle cleanse.
I am excited to be joined by Pete Duenes of Ortho Molecular who will talk about the importance of detoxifying. Ortho has one of my favorite liver cleanse products called the Core Restore Kit, it's easy to use and produces great results - and Pete will be giving one of them away!

The Sniffling / Aching Season is Here
Happy February! Today I want to address the latest round of cold and flu symptoms going around. I am getting lots of calls
for a fever flu that just hangs around, and also for a chronic cough that lingers. So what to do?
Here’s what I say. First and most important: homeopathy, herbs and supplements are far superior to over the counter
meds for both prevention and actual cure. The natural stuff has been around for centuries, is safe for all ages and has
no bad side effects &ndash unlike the 136 million bottles of OTC medicine that were recalled last April.
It has been estimated that Americans get about 200 colds in a lifetime. But as far as I´m concerned, why suffer? We don´t have to
let them get us down or linger, which is why I am listing my top picks for optimal prevention and also for quick, deep relief of symptoms.
To prevent a cold: Preventicin, Immune Complex, CFlav or Echinacea Vitamin C
To prevent the flu: Thymactiv, Esberitox, Wellness Formula, Flu Nosode
If you have a cold: Yin Qiao Pian, Nucleotide, Infecticin, Pleo Not
If you have the flu: Guna Flu or Influenza CM, Sambucus, Pleo Ut
For fever: Viral CM, Ganmaoling, Pleo Quent
For a cough: Ping Chuan, Dulpulmon, ViraClear, Pulmonest, Pleo Ut ‘S’
And let´s not forget the simple things – like getting enough rest, eating well, and staying hydrated. The above is just for that
extra “wellness magic” we all crave. Many of you have some of these remedies at home already, but for those of you in need…
everything is available at
www.holistichavenpharmacy.com and they are on special for the month.
So here´s to staying well during the month of Love. And please, if you have been suffering with something that isn’t going away – by
all means make an appointment so that I can see whatÂs going on and ZAP it!
Yours in Health,
Nancy Sacks, D.H.M.

Vitamin D for Optimal Immune Function
Vitamin D is an immune system booster and is becoming increasingly recognized for its ability to prevent diseases like diabetes, depression, and heart disease. Though the link between low D levels and chronic disease has been well known for some time, a new study has shed further light on its anti-cancer effects.
Although you can get Vitamin D from food and sunlight, it may not be enough. This is where good quality supplements can help. Vitamin D3 is available in a gel cap, a liquid or as a chewable, ranging from 400 IU all the way up to 5000 IU. Many Multi Vitamin and Mineral supplements also contain some D, which counts toward your daily total.
If you have belly fat -- extra weight around your middle that seems impossible to lose -- you are most likely feeling the effects of a hormonal imbalance.
Blasting belly fat is crucial for many reasons beyond just being able to button your jeans comfortably. Carrying belly fat makes it harder to lose weight, worsens menopausal symptoms, and increases your risk of heart disease and diabetes.
The good news is that blasting belly fat can be done very successfully through holistic methods ranging from diet, exercise, and stress reduction to herbs, supplements and natural hormone therapy.
If you are experiencing belly fat that won't budge even when you diet and exercise, you may be becoming Insulin Resistant. This is a condition also known as Metabolic Syndrome. Hormonal shifts, chronic stress or a history of poor eating habits can prevent the insulin that your body produces from entering your cells. Locked out from the cells, the insulin ends up being stored in the belly. Metabolic Syndrome is a definite cause for concern and action, because it can eventually lead to diabetes if left untreated. If diet and exercise are not effective in controlling this condition, there are enzymes and supplements that can help rebalance your body's chemistry.
There are general rules for a healthy diet that everyone can benefit from, but because each woman is unique, it helps to be in tune with your own body. If you experience bloating, constipation, headaches, rashes, itchiness or sleepiness after eating, you are probably not digesting your foods efficiently. When your body has difficulty breaking down foods, belly fat will likely result. You may have hidden food allergies, or you may simply be deficient in digestive enzymes. Once the issue is identified, a natural solution can easily remedy the situation.
Your diet should be one that you can easily maintain and enjoy. There is no need for deprivation, just for healthy foods. Forget counting calories and focus on the quality of the foods you eat. Eat plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, protein and complex carbohydrates. Buy organic whenever possible. Avoid "white" foods such as sugar and white flour, and avoid refined and processed foods. Make sure you consume plenty of protein. Meats are just one of the many sources. Try fish, beans, nuts, soy, quinoa (a protein-rich grain) and even brown rice.
Replacing three big meals with four to six small meals throughout the day helps to boost your metabolism and balance your blood sugar. A good rule of thumb is to eat every three hours or so. Starting your day with a tall glass of water and drinking water throughout the day is also a great weight loss tool. Water helps flush toxins from your system and increases your body's ability to release weight. Try drinking half of your body weight in ounces every day, preferably between meals.
Exercise is essential in reducing belly fat. Even ten minutes a day can make a significant improvement in your health. Incorporate exercises that you will enjoy such as walking, dancing, biking, swimming or aerobics. Weight training and Pilates are especially helpful in losing pounds around your middle. If you are exercising without seeing results, it helps to occasionally change your routine. If you need expert advice, working with a trainer could really make a difference.
Coping with stress is as important and vital to your body as diet and exercise. It helps to reflect on your daily life, identify your stressors and make changes to reduce them. If there are external stressors that cannot be changed, make internal changes to help you handle them better. Yoga, deep breathing, and dynamic relaxation (a meditation technique) can be extremely helpful in providing stress relief.
If you are doing all the right things, and still gaining weight, it's probably time to look a little deeper. Your thyroid, adrenals, or hormones may need to be checked. There are many natural and holistic alternatives to synthetic hormone replacement therapy. Balancing your hormones, thyroid or adrenals can be life changing. The benefits can reach far beyond weight loss, offering relief from low energy, foggy thinking, pain, sleep disturbances, mood swings, and much more.
Hormone imbalances that cause belly fat can be a result of s
tress, improper diet, the natural aging process, and even our environment. But as you learn new information, you can empower yourself. You can take control of your own body, get your hormones in balance, and feel good physically and emotionally. Which means you can fully enjoy your life. Not to mention button your jeans.

The Benefits of Going Organic
Here´s a subject close to my heart…Going Organic.
I know that many of you already buy organic produce. There are many benefits such as fewer pesticides and chemicals, higher nutrient content, it is eco-friendly and is also much tastier.
The good news is that organic products are now more readily available, and have also become much more cost effective. Think Trader Joe´s instead of Whole Foods for example.
Research shows that the most important items to buy organic are; apples, pears, grapes, peaches, strawberries, cherries, bell peppers, celery, nectarines, lettuces and leafy greens, meat, eggs, milk and dairy, carrots, potatoes and tomatoes.
It is interesting to note that there are some items such as onions, avocados, pineapple, corn on the cob, mangos, kiwi, eggplant, papaya and watermelon that have a protective skin and are therefore safer to buy conventional.
